§ MR. J. F. X. O'BRIEN (Mayo, S.)
asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether he has any information to show that discontent has, within the past five years, been exhibited in Madras; and, if he will call for a Return showing the number of tenants evicted or otherwise proceeded against, by the Government of Sir M. E. Grant Duff?
§ THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JOHN GORST) (Chatham)
There has been no information of any special discontent in Madras. There is no eviction of Government tenants in Madras; but both land and personal property is liable to sale to realize 513 arrears of land revenue. The average annual number of landowners whose property is thus sold is 116,000 out of 4,500,000. No further Return appears to the Secretary of State to be necessary.
