HC Deb 15 March 1887 vol 312 cc352-3
MR. GILHOOLY (Cork, W.)

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether his attention has been directed to the statement of Mr. Thomas, senior member of the Madras Board of Revenue, in his Report on the current Tanjore Remission Scandal, that a widespread conspiracy exists, and that the district officials are too much interested in land;and, whether uncovenanted officials are forbidden to hold land in their districts;and, if so, whether any collector has, during the past 10 years, brought to the notice of Government that the Tanjore officials habitually contravene the Regulations in the matter of land holding?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JOHN GORST) (Chatham)

The Secretary of State's attention has been directed to the Report in question, and a despatch has been sent to the Governor of Madras on the subject. Un-covenanted officials who exercise independent judicial or revenue Junctions are forbidden to hold land in their districts;but I am not aware that any collector has, within the last 10 years, brought to the notice of the Governor of Madras that the Tanjore officials contravene this Regulation habitually.
