HC Deb 11 March 1887 vol 312 cc11-2
MR. DILLWYN (Swansea, Town)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether arrangements have been made for the return of the Chief Langalibalele to Natal; and, if so, under what conditions?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir HENRY HOLLAND) (Hampstead)

The Legislative Council of Natal has agreed to the return of Langalibalele to the Colony under the following conditions:—(1) That Langalibalele be placed in the Zwart Kop location, near Pietermaritzburg, under the charge of the Chief Teteleka; (2) that only such Natives as are bonâ fide members of his family be allowed to lire with him; (3) that he be debarred from exercising any authority whatever as a Chief, or from claiming any privilege as such. £50 per annum has been voted for his maintenance. I may add that permission was given, in a despatch dated January 27 last, to make such arrangements as might be necessary for Laugalibalele's return; but that there has not yet been time to learn what action has been taken in the matter.
