HC Deb 10 March 1887 vol 311 c1739
MR. D. SULLIVAN(for Sir THOMAS ESMONDE) (Dublin Co., S.)

asked the Secretary to the Treasury, If the Treasury will re-consider their refusal to purchase the Challoner Smith Collection of mezzotint engravings, to be sold on the 21st March and the following days, by Messieurs Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge, for the Irish National Gallery; and, if they will consent to purchase a portion of the Collection, if they cannot see their way to granting the £10,000 to purchase the whole?

THE SECRETARY (Mr. JACKSON) (Leeds, N.)

I am afraid that I cannot hold out any hope that the Treasury will be able to make a grant for the purchase of the whole or of any part of Mr. Challoner Smith's Collection of mezzotint engravings.
