HC Deb 10 March 1887 vol 311 cc1721-2
MR. RICHARD (Merthyr Tydvil)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether England has recently annexed territory on the East Coast of Africa extending between Mombasa and the mouth of the Tana River, or in that vicinity; or have any steps been taken, or negotiations entered into, with a view to such annexation?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON) (Manchester, N.E.)

No such steps have been taken, nor have any such negotiations been entered into. The territory mentioned is part of the dominions of the Sultan of Zanzibar, the independence of which is recognized by Great Britain as well as by France and Germany.
