HC Deb 31 January 1887 vol 310 c273
MR. SEXTON (Belfast, W.)

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether, considering that the Belfast riots inquiry closed more than three months ago, the Government had yet received from the dissenting Commissioner, Mr. M'Hardy, his Report; and, what steps the Government intended to take to press forward arrangements for the preservation of the peace in Belfast, in view of the recurrence of serious disturbances within the last few days?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY (Sir MICHAEL HICKS-BEACH) (Bristol, W.)

, in reply, said, he would remind the hon. Member for West Belfast that the other four Commissioners only presented their Report a week ago. He did not doubt that Mr. M'Hardy would present his Report very shortly. It was obviously desirable that the matter should be considered at once; but he did not think it would be wise to attempt hurried legislation on account of the unfortunate outbreak of Saturday.
