HC Deb 21 February 1887 vol 311 c169
MR. HOWELL (Bethnal Green, N.E.)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether he is aware that Mr. Samuel Hunter, gas manager at the gasworks of the Salford Corporation, who was charged with bribery in connection with the coal contracts, and dismissed for such offence by the Gas Committee, is a Justice of the Peace; and whether he will call the attention of the Lord Chancellor to the disclosures at the recent trial of Hunter v. Lever.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

I observe that a gentleman of this name is on the Commission of the Peace for Ashton-under-Lyne; but do not know whether it is the gentleman referred to in the Question. The matter is one coming within the province of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and not of the Lord Chancellor. I will call the attention of my noble Friend to the matter.
