HC Deb 10 February 1887 vol 310 c1085
DR. R. MACDONALD (Ross and Cromarty)

asked the Secretary for Scotland, Whether he is aware, or, if not aware, whether he will make inquiry as to the allegation that a great many of the Crofters in Lewis and Skye are unable to make their applications to the Crofters' Commission, through inability to pay the preliminary fees; and, in the event of this allegation being found true, whether he can see his way in such cases to dispense with the ordinary fees?

THE SECRETARY FOR SCOTLAND (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR) (Manchester, E.)

I was not aware that any such allegation had been made; I will inquire into the matter, and, if necessary, communicate with the Treasury, by whom, under the Crofters' Act, the scale of fees fixed by the Crofters' Commission has been approved.
