§ MR. CAREW (Kildare, N.)asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether he is aware that King Theebaw had put and end to all leases of the Bombay-Burmah Trading Corporation, on the ground of unfair dealing on the part of the Corporation; and, whether the Government have made, or intend making, any inquiry into these 1359 charges before recognizing in any form their claims?
§ THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JOHN GORST) (Chatham)The circumstances under which King Theebaw cancelled the leases of the Bombay-Burmah Trading Corporation are perfectly well known to the Secretary of State; and I may remind the House that the injustice of the King in this matter was one of the causes which led to the conquest of Upper Burmah.
