HC Deb 22 August 1887 vol 319 cc1358-9
MR. CAREW (Kildare, N.)

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether he is aware that King Theebaw had put and end to all leases of the Bombay-Burmah Trading Corporation, on the ground of unfair dealing on the part of the Corporation; and, whether the Government have made, or intend making, any inquiry into these charges before recognizing in any form their claims?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JOHN GORST) (Chatham)

The circumstances under which King Theebaw cancelled the leases of the Bombay-Burmah Trading Corporation are perfectly well known to the Secretary of State; and I may remind the House that the injustice of the King in this matter was one of the causes which led to the conquest of Upper Burmah.
