HC Deb 13 August 1887 vol 319 c364
MR. CUNNINGHAMS GRAHAM (Lanark, N.W.)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, If he has seen the statement contained in The Pall Mall Gazette of the 12th August as to the statement of Mr. Justice Stephen's belief in Israel Lipski's innocence?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E)

The only statement I have seen in The Pall Mall Gazette of the 12th instant, in reference to the case of Israel Lipski, is that Mr. Justice Stephen and Mr. Poland laid great stress on certain portions of the evidence; but admitted, it is reported, that there was something to be said in the prisoner's favour.

MR. CUNNINGHAME GRAHAM

asked, whether the right hon. Gentleman had seen the fifth edition of the same paper, which contained a full statement with regard to Lipski's case?

MR. MATTHEWS

No; I have not.
