HC Deb 05 August 1887 vol 318 cc1379-80

In reply to Mr. C. S. KENNY (York, W.R., Barnsley),

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

said, he had received a vast number of reports relative to the birching a boy at Ilkeston, who was alleged to have been seriously injured. Allegations of misconduct were made against the police, who were not, however, under his jurisdiction. He had referred the matter to the Chairman of Quarter Sessions, who informed him that the Police Committee had been directed to investigate the matter.
