HC Deb 27 April 1887 vol 314 cc148-9

(Mr. William Henry Smith, Mr. Secretary Stanhope, Sir John Gorst.)

[BILL 228.] SECOND READING.

Order for Second Reading read.

Mr. DILLWYN and Sir JOHN SWINBURNE

rose simultaneously and objected.

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASUREY (Mr. W. H. SMITH) (Strand, Westminster)

I hope that the objection will not be persisted in, and that the second reading will be allowed to be taken. [Cries of"Order!"] I may point out that the Duke of Connaught, during his absence from India, will receive no salary whatever. By an arrangement this Bill is rendered necessary, and should be passed without delay, in order to enable His Royal Highness to leave India without vacating his command. [Renewed cries of "Order!"] I appeal to hon. Members—[Further cries of "Order!"]

MR. SPEAKER

If any hon. Member objects that is sufficient to block the Bill.

Second Reading deferred till Tomorrow.
