HC Deb 18 April 1887 vol 313 c1118
MR. JUSTIN HUNTLY M'CARTHY (Newry)

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether he was aware of the circumstances under which William Durnan was, on the 27th October last, convicted at Newry Petty Sessions, and sentenced to eight months' imprisonment, he being at the time of unsound mind; and whether the said William Durnan has been examined by the medical officer of the gaol; or, if not, whether be will be so examined and properly treated?

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Colonel KING HARMAN) (Kent, Isle of Thanet)

(who replied) said: This man was convicted and sentenced as stated; but the magistrates do not appear to have had any reason to suppose that he was of unsound mind. He was seen in the usual course by the medical officer of the prison, and passed by him. He has recently been removed to an asylum.
