HC Deb 23 August 1886 vol 308 cc268-9
MR. F. S. POWELL (Wigan)

asked the First Commissioner of Works, What measures he proposes to adopt with reference to works for the restoration of Westminster Hall, and when operations are to be commenced?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER (Mr. PLUNKET) (Dublin University)

The works at Westminster Hall—as recommended by the Report of the Select Committee in April and by vote of the House in June of lastyear—are now about being carried out under the direction of Mr. J. A. Pearson, R.A. A contract has been entered into with Messrs. Shillitoe and Sons, of Bury St. Edmunds, the contractors for Truro Cathedral, and they are now making preparations and getting materials upon the site, so that the works will almost immediately be in active progress. Some delay, I believe, arose partly in consequence of the vacancy in the office of Consulting Surveyor, and partly owing to certain technical difficulties which arose in connection with the settlement of the contract.

SIR HENRY TYLER (Great Yarmouth)

inquired when the Hall would be again open to the public, and when the ugly wooden hoardings would be taken away?

MR. PLUNKET

desired to have Notice of the Question.
