HC Deb 19 April 1886 vol 305 c5
MR. GILHOOLY (Cork, W.)

asked the President of the Board of Trade, If he is aware that it is essentially necessary for the success of the fishing industry in Bantry Bay that the Lighthouse at the western end of Bere Ireland should be utilised; and, if he will take the necessary steps to accomplish that object?

THE PRESIDENT (Mr. MUNDELLA) (Sheffield, Brightside)

The Commissioners of Irish Lights inform me that before the tower at the western end of Bere Island was finished the idea of exhibiting a light from it was abandoned, owing to the difficulty of sailing vessels navigating up the western channel in consequence of its narrowness. On this decision being taken the present Berehaven Light was at once commenced.
