HC Deb 09 April 1886 vol 304 c1165
MR. PYNE (Waterford, W.)

asked the honourable Member for North West Staffordshire, If the so-called safety matches supplied in the smoking room are the same as those supplied to other Government Offices; if he is aware that they will light if rubbed on the floor or window; if it is a fact that English made matches will not do so; and, seeing the great danger that may occur from fire by persons carelessly leaving them about, believing in their safety qualities, will he arrange that English ones may be used instead?

A LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. LEVESON GOWER) (Stafford, N.W.)

, in reply, said, that the matches used were the Lion and Bryant and May's safety matches, which were also supplied to all the Government Offices. If the House preferred it, the latter only would in future be supplied.
