HC Deb 01 April 1886 vol 304 cc442-3
SIR HENRY TYLER (Great Yarmouth)

asked the President of the Board of Trade, Whether he has any further information as to the cause of the disaster to the steamship Oregon; whether any vessel that could have come into collision with the Oregon is known to be missing; whether he is able, from the facts of the case, as far as they are at present ascertained, to explain how it was that a first-class steamer, constructed by eminent builders, with water-tight compartments, to prevent her in such a case from sinking, could only be kept afloat for a few hours after the injury she received; into how many water-tight compartments the Oregon was divided; whether their construction was considered satisfactory; and, whether steps cannot be taken to render such vessels less easily sinkable?

THE PRESIDENT (Mr. MUNDELLA) (Sheffield, Brightside)

Some days ago I ordered a full inquiry to be instituted into the causes of the disaster to the steamship Oregon; and until that in- quiry is completed I think the House will agree that I should not express any opinion on the subject.
