HC Deb 11 May 1885 vol 298 c134
MR. SEXTON

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Why Mr. Hamilton, resident magistrate, Armagh, receives £125 a-year more than the maximum fixed allowance for a resident magistrate of the first class in Ireland?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNEEMAN

In 1881 it was found necessary to increase the staff of the Crime Department in the Castle, and Mr. Hamilton, who was then a Resident Magistrate, was brought in on a salary of £800 a-year, the Treasury stipulating that, should his services at any time cease to be required in the Chief Secretary's office, he would not be entitled to compensation, provided he were offered another appointment imposing duties analogous to those which he previously discharged, and were allowed to hold it with a salary of not less than £800 a-year. Consequent on a general reorganization of the staff of the office at the latter end of 1882, the appointment held by Mr. Hamilton was abolished, and he was re-appointed a Resident Magistrate with a personal salary of £800 a-year under the stipulation referred to.
