HC Deb 11 May 1885 vol 298 cc146-7
MR. O'SULLIVAN

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, If he is aware of the many complaints which have been made in several towns in the United Kingdom regarding the practice of gambling, drinking, and betting carried on at different clubs during th9 last four or five years; and, if so, whether he intends taking any steps to bring those clubs under the jurisdiction of the Licensing Laws?

SIR WILLIAM HARCOURT

I have been requested to answer this Question. As I stated a few days ago in reply to a Question upon this subject, we have come to the conclusion after very careful inquiry that sufficient ground has not been shown at present for interfering with the clubs.
