HC Deb 08 May 1885 vol 298 cc18-9
MR. RICHARD POWER

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether he has received any communication respecting the Water-ford Industrial School; whether the number of children in this school is in excess of the number for which a Government grant is allowed; whether the school is capable of accommodating a larger number; whether the Government inspector has spoken in the most favourable terms of its management; and, whether, under the circumstances, he will consider the propriety of increasing the grant to the school?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

I have received a resolution of the Corporation of Waterford in favour of increasing the certificate of the industrial school, which, I believe, has now nine inmates in excess of the number for which the Government grant is allowed. As the Estimates for the present year were closed before I received the resolution, I could merely mark the case for submission when next year's Estimates are being prepared. I must not, however, be taken as holding out any hope of an enlarged certificate in this case.
