HC Deb 10 March 1885 vol 295 c623
MR. R. N. FOWLER

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether there is any intention to recall Colonel Methuen's Irregular Cavalry from South Africa for service in the Soudan; if so, how it is proposed to replace them?

MR. EVELYN ASHLEY

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given a few days ago by the Secretary of State for War, in which he said that it would not be possible, until further information should have been received as to the progress of affairs in South Africa, to say whether any such offers could be accepted. And I can assure my hon. Friend that there can be no question of moving this force from South Africa until its services there are no longer required.
