HC Deb 26 February 1885 vol 294 cc1403-4
MR. KENNY

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, If it is usual or legal that the dispensary doctor of a district should be a land agent in the same district; and, whether, in the event of any instances being supplied him of such a state of facts, he will, as President of the Irish Local Government Board, cause steps to be taken to remedy it?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

As a medical officer of a district is not bound to give his whole time to the duties of his office, it would not be illegal, though it is not usual, for him to act as a land agent. If, however, it were shown that a medical officer undertook work of any kind that interfered with his official duties, the Local Government Board would take such steps as appeared necessary to secure due attention to the sick poor.
