§ MR. ROLLSasked the President of the Board of Trade, Whether it is with his approval that the Railway Companies, instead of withdrawing the Rates and Charges Bills, intend to press the same on for Second Reading; and, whether he intends to oppose the Second Reading on behalf of Her Majesty's Government?
§ MR. CHAMBERLAIN, in reply, said, the Railway Companies had not consulted him as to the course to be taken in this matter. He had no information as to the course which they had determined to pursue; but if the Bills should come on for second reading, then, as he had said before, he would consider it to be his duty, on behalf of the Government, to oppose them.
