HC Deb 09 April 1885 vol 296 c1155
SIR H. DRUMMOND WOLFF

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether Sir W. B. Gurdon, being a Parliamentary candidate, has retired from his appointment in the Treasury?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. CHILDERS)

No, Sir; Sir William Gurdon is not a Parliamentary candidate. But whenever, if ever, he should become one, he will give up his appointment in the Treasury.

SIR H. DRUMMOND WOLFF

asked whether the right hon. Gentleman had seen an announcement in The Lunn Advertiser to the effect that Sir William Gurdon had written a letter, which was read at a meeting of the Liberal Association, consenting to his name being mentioned as a candidate for the constituency? At the same meeting a letter was read from Mr. Lestrange withdrawing his name as a candidate.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. CHILDERS)

Will the hon. Member give me the date of that extract?

SIR H. DRUMMOND WOLFF

The 28th of March, 1885.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. CHILDERS)

If the hon. Member will let me have the extract, I will look into the matter.
