MR. ASHMEAD-BARTLETT

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether any steps are being taken by Her Majesty's Ministers to bring about a suspension of the War between the French Republic and China in "the interests of British Commerce, which is seriously affected?

Her Majesty's Government have been in confidential communication with the Governments of both France and China, but as yet without any practical result. I am not able at present to make any further statement on the subject.
