HC Deb 03 November 1884 vol 293 cc791-2
MR. ARTHUR O'CONNOR

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether the Local Government Board have refused to use the powers vested in them to set aside the votes of the Trustees of the Downshire Estate, given in the late election for Poor Law Guardians in Edenderry Division, although the said Trustees have no beneficial interest in the property?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

I am advised that Trustees are, under certain circumstances, entitled to vote; and in the present case the Trustees appeared to be entitled. The objection raised was as to whether they could vote separately, or should vote jointly; but this turned out immaterial, as they appointed the same proxy. The Local Government Board has, however, ordered an inquiry into the election on other grounds.
