HC Deb 01 May 1884 vol 287 c1031
MR. BROADHURST

asked Mr. Attorney General, Whether the stoppage of a portion of workmen's wages by employers, for the purpose of contributions to sick clubs or pension funds, is a violation of the Truck Act?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (Sir HENRY JAMES)

, in reply, said, that there had been a decision on this subject given by the Court of Appeal in February last; but he was sorry to say that it was somewhat complicated. The result seemed to him to be that the practice described in the Question would be within the Truck Act, unless the payments were made under written agreement to the effect that they should be allowed, or unless they were absolutely paid over to the medical officer of the Society.
