HC Deb 01 May 1884 vol 287 c1034
MR. BIGGAR

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Has he yet formulated his plan for increase of emoluments for Convent National Schools in Ireland; and, if so, will he give some particulars of his scheme?

MR. TREVELYAN

Sir, no plan has yet been formulated; but the Irish Government has been in communication with the Commissioners of National Education since the debate raised by the hon. Gentleman. I may state, however, that in the event of the Treasury consenting to any arrangement which would involve increased expenditure, the Estimates which are already before the House would not admit of such arrangement taking effect during the present financial year.

MR. BIGGAR

Could not the right hon. Gentleman bring in a Supplementary Estimate?

MR. TREVELYAN

The Treasury should be consulted, and I am afraid there would be considerable difficulty in getting them to consent.
