HC Deb 03 March 1884 vol 285 c339
MR. JOSEPH COWEN

asked the Under Secretery of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the Government is aware that British subjects employed on certain Russian Railways have received an intimation to the effect that, unless they became Russian subjects within three months from the date of such intimation, they will be required to resign the appointments they at present hold; and, whether any step can be taken to obtain the withdrawal of the order?

LORD EDMOND FITZMAURICE

Lord Granville's attention has been called to the subject, and Her Majesty's Ambassador at St. Petersburg has been instructed to make inquiries and report.

MR. JOSEPH COWEN

May I ask whether, in the event of these unfortunate men being dismissed, Her Majesty's Government will make any effort to obtain compensation?

LORD EDMOND FITZMAURICE

Lord Granville will naturally wait for the Report before deciding what course he will take.
