HC Deb 17 July 1884 vol 290 c1408
MR. JUSTIN M'CARTHY

asked the Postmaster General, With reference to a Post Office circular, printed for general circulation throughout the service, which contained on July 1st an announcement of a vacancy in the following words:— Surveyor's clerkship for service in Ireland, salary £150, rising by £15 to £300, then by £20 to £350, with an allowance of 15s. a-day when absent from head quarters. Except in the case of those who have been temporarily employed as surveyor's clerks, the selection will be confined to candidates of not more than five years' service; and, if he would explain why officers of longer experience should thus be excluded from the candidature?

MR. FAWCETT

The question of the method of appointing surveyors' clerks has been for some time under the careful consideration of the Department; and I believe I shall soon be in a position to come to a decision on the subject. This being the case, I intend to defer making the appointment referred to by the hon. Member until the new regulations are settled, and they will apply to it.
