HC Deb 18 February 1884 vol 284 c1176
SIR HENRY TYLER

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, To give the House the latest information as to the condition of affairs between Chili and Peru, and the prospects of peace being finally concluded, and on what terms, between those countries; and to state what steps Her Majesty's Government are taking in regard to the letter addressed to Lord Granville by the Committee of Peruvian Bondholders on the 10th of January, and the memorial forwarded by that Committee signed by Peruvian bondholders; and, when definite replies may be expected to the representations which have been made?

LORD EDMOND FLTZMAURICE

A Treaty of Peace between Chili and Peru, signed on the 20th of October last, is awaiting the ratification of the Peruvian Congress. Her Majesty's Government have agreed to unite with the French and other Governments in a representation to the Governments of Peru and Chili for the protection of the rights of the public creditors of Peru, which, in their opinion, present peculiar features, warranting their making a communication on the subject to the Governments of Chili and Peru.
