HC Deb 04 December 1884 vol 294 c647
MR. GRAY

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether it is his intention to introduce a Union Rating Bill for Ireland this Session?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

The Government are fully aware of the importance of this question, and are desirous of dealing with it; but I am not in a position to make any promise regarding proposals of legislation during the current Session.

MR. GRAY

I would ask the right hon. Gentleman, whether the late Chief Secretary did not give what, in fact, amounted to a pledge that a Bill dealing with the subject would be introduced?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

No; I think he made the same answer that the Government were very anxious on the matter; but he made no pledge.
