HC Deb 04 December 1884 vol 294 c656
MR. DALRYMPLE

asked the Financial Secretary for War, Whether it is the case that Majors holding Staff appointments as Brigade Majors or Garrison Instructors only draw the allowances of Captains; and, if so, whether he will consider the hardship inflicted on such officers, who are denied the allowances of their rank because they hold Captains' appointments?

SIR ARTHUR HAYTER

Sir, the relative rank of Captain is attached to the Staff appointments referred to. If officers, who are Regimental Majors, accept them, they do so with a full knowledge of the conditions. I may add that the present aggregate pay and allowances of a Brigade Major or Garrison Instructor exceed considerably, under ordinary circumstances, those of a Regimental Major.
