HC Deb 01 December 1884 vol 294 c358
MR. SEXTON (for Mr. DAWSON)

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether, considering the many local and other questions of detail involved in the Limerick extra Police Tax, the Lord Lieutenant will comply with the request of the Corporation to appoint a Commission to inquire into the merits of the case in Limerick?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

I cannot add anything to what I stated in reply to a former Question on this subject—namely, that the Government could not entertain the application for a public inquiry.

MR. SEXTON

Is it true that the Lord Lieutenant has been informed by his Legal Advisers that he has no legal power to recover this tax now?

MR. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

There is no truth in the statement, as far as I am aware.
