HC Deb 14 June 1883 vol 280 c542
MR. GOURLEY

asked the Secretary of State for War, Under whose authority, and for what purpose, soldiers are engaged in doing daily duty at the Law Courts; and, whether he has had any intimation from the judges that they need a military guard?

THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON

Soldiers have been employed on sentry duty at the Law Courts on my authority, for the purpose of assisting the police in the protection of the buildings. I have not had any intimation from the Judges in the matter; but the sentries were furnished on the request of the Secretary of State for the Home Department. I may add that the police arrangements having now been sufficiently advanced, the sentries have been withdrawn.
