HC Deb 23 July 1883 vol 282 c128
MR. GIBSON

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether he has yet inquired into the particulars of the interview between Dr. Carte, and the Right honourable member for Bradford (when Chief Secretary), and the late T. H. Burke, relative to compensating the Irish prison surgeons for extra duties actually cast upon them under the Protection of Person and Property Act (Ireland); and, if so, what has been the result?

MR. TREVELYAN

I have made inquiry of my right hon. Friend the Member for Bradford (Mr. W. E. Forster), who informs me that he does not recollect any special interview with Dr. Carte in the presence of the late Mr. Burke. he states, however, that he thinks it likely that he said that if any such claim were sent to him he would press it upon the favourable consideration of the Treasury.

MR. GIBSON

asked whether Dr. Carte's account of the interview would be accepted if the right lion. Member for Bradford had doubts upon the subject?

MR. TREVELYAN

said, that the admission of any special claim by Dr. Carte would be made upon a principle which would open up a very large number of cases; and he should require a very specific assurance from his right hon. Friend the Member for Bradford before he could assent to such a claim.
