HC Deb 09 August 1883 vol 282 cc2098-9
SIR GEORGE CAMPBELL

asked the Secretary of State for War, Whether there was any truth in the statement which appeared a few weeks ago in the public journals, that it had been determined to send to Egypt the families of the British soldiers there; and, whether it was still intended to send them, when the season and an abatement of the epidemic permit, in view of a probable Military occupation of considerable duration?

THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON

No, Sir; the statement is not accurate. Inquiries have, however, been made as to the accommodation available for such a purpose, in the event of a possible prolongation of the service of the battalions now in Egypt. The question will be duly considered when the hot season is over and the cholera has ceased, and when a further decision has been come to by the Government on the amount of force to be retained in Egypt, and the duration of its detention.
