§ SIR GEORGE CAMPBELLasked the Secretary of State for War, Whether there was any truth in the statement which appeared a few weeks ago in the public journals, that it had been determined to send to Egypt the families of the British soldiers there; and, whether it was still intended to send them, when the season and an abatement of the epidemic permit, in view of a probable Military occupation of considerable duration?
THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTONNo, Sir; the statement is not accurate. Inquiries have, however, been made as to the accommodation available for such a purpose, in the event of a possible 2099 prolongation of the service of the battalions now in Egypt. The question will be duly considered when the hot season is over and the cholera has ceased, and when a further decision has been come to by the Government on the amount of force to be retained in Egypt, and the duration of its detention.
