HC Deb 17 April 1883 vol 278 c425
LORD EUSTACE CECIL

asked the Secretary of State for War, The total number of First Class Reserve men on the Establishment on the 1st of April 1883, distinguishing the number still serving in Egypt from the number in the United Kingdom?

SIR ARTHUR HAYTER (for The Marquess of HARTINGTON)

The strength of the First Class Army Reserve on the 1st of April was 27,073 men, exclusive of those still serving with the Colours. The number still reckoned with the Colours is reported as 978; but these men are all on furlough, excepting a few left in Egypt, who have been detained on account of sickness.
