HC Deb 09 April 1883 vol 277 c1828
MR. W. H. JAMES

asked the President of the Board of Trade, Whether his Department has had brought under its notice any means of improving the ventilation of the Underground Railway by the use of engines other than those of the ordinary locomotive; and, if he is aware whether any trials of any such locomotives have ever taken place?

MR. CHAMBERLAIN

Sir, no such means as are alluded to in the Question have been brought under the notice of the Board of Trade for improving the ventilation of the Underground Railway. I ought to add that I have no appliances for testing any invention which may be brought to me, and I have no authority to insure their adoption, even if I should approve of them.
