HC Deb 31 October 1882 vol 274 cc465-6
SIR H. DRUMMOND WOLFF

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, With what authority in Egypt, and by what document, Her Majesty's Government have arranged that the cost of the Army now being organised in that Country is not to exceed a specified amount; whether the document, in which such an agreement is laid down, will be laid before the House; and, whether the amount in question is to be maintained irrespective of the decision of the Chamber of Notables?

SIR CHARLES W. DILKE

Sir, the information to which I alluded yesterday came from Sir Edward Malet, who was informed, on the 20th instant, that the amount estimated for the cost of the Egyptian Army would be the same as was laid down by the Liquidation Commission. The last branch of the Ques- tion comes under the statement made for himself and his Colleagues by the Prime Minister on the first night of the Session.
