HC Deb 11 November 1882 vol 274 c1643
MR. ASHMEAD-BARTLETT

asked the Secretary of State for War, Whether, in view of the great cost of living at Cairo and throughout Egypt, it is proposed to make an extra allowance of pay to Her Majesty's Forces quartered in that country?

MR. CHILDERS

In reply to the hon. Gentleman, I have to say that the non-commissioned officers and men in Egypt, so far from being put to extra expense, are better off than at home, as they receive a full field ration gratis. As to officers, I am in communication with the Treasury on the subject of the proper allowance they should receive to cover the extra expense of living.
