HC Deb 10 November 1882 vol 274 cc1177-8
LORD EUSTACE CECIL

gave Notice that on Thursday he would ask the Secretary of State for War, Whether it is true that three British officers had been despatched on a special mission to the Soudan; and, if so, what arrangements he has made for their protection, having regard to the fate which so recently befell Professor Palmer's party in the desert?

MR. CHILDERS

Sir, I will answer that Question at once. Three officers have gone to the Soudan to make a report, not to take part in any military affairs. I consulted Sir Archibald Alison on the point whether it would be wise to send an escort, and he answered that it would not be wise. Therefore, an escort will not be sent with these officers.
