§ MR. W. FOWLERasked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether, having regard to the eminent services of the late Professor E. H. Palmer as a man of letters, and to the circumstances under which he lost his life, the Government are prepared to recommend that some provision be made for his family at the public expense?
MR. GLADSTONESir, in answer to this Question of my hon. Friend, I am afraid we must conclude, though we have no definite information, that Professor Palmer has fallen a victim to his patriotism and courage in this matter. Assuming that to be the fact, which I have no reason to doubt, I think the subject which my hon. Friend mentions is one which well deserves our consideration.
