HC Deb 02 November 1882 vol 274 c662
MR. W. H. SMITH

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, If Her Majesty's Government will take steps to inflict condign punishment on the murderers of Professor Palmer, Captain Gill, and Lieutenant Charrington, who met their death in the discharge of duties undertaken by direction of Her Majesty's Government?

MR. GLADSTONE

Undoubtedly Her Majesty's Government will use their efforts in the direction of bringing the offenders to justice. I have a telegram, which arrived to-day, conveying news from Colonel Warren to this effect—that he expects to be from 14 to 20 days in the execution of his task, the inquiry having been committed to him, and that he hopes—these are his words—" to bring in some of the guilty parties concerned," returning home by such and such a route.
