HC Deb 02 March 1882 vol 266 cc1924-5
MR. W. J. CORBET

asked, If it is true that head constables of the Royal Irish Constabulary who have attained the age of forty-eight years are declared by the regulations of that force to be ineligible for advancement to the rank of sub-inspector; and, if such is found to be the fact, will the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland have the rule expunged from the constabulary regulations?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. W. M. JOHNSON)

Yes, Sir; 48 years is the limit of age fixed by the regulations for head constables eligible for promotion to the rank of sub-inspector. It is not considered desirable to alter the regulation.

MR. W. J. CORBET

Does this rule apply to sub-inspectors?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. W. M. JOHNSON)

The Question only refers to head constables, and it is only with reference to them that I have received information.
