HC Deb 03 July 1882 vol 271 c1252
VISCOUNT FOLKESTONE

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether it is true, as stated in the "Times" of the 29th, that some time ago a change was made in the regulations of the Government in consequence of which police protection was withdrawn from caretakers, and they were told that they must take care of themselves?

MR. TREVELYAN

The latest arrangement on the subject, which is now being acted on, is that which was communicated to the Emergency Committee and the Property Defence Association on the 3rd of May. That arrangement is that all applications for protection for caretakers shall be made directly to the County Inspector of Constabulary in the county in which the protection is required, and the nature and extent of the protection to be granted will thereupon be decided by the County Inspector in consultation with the Resident Magistrate. This arrangement was made with a view of avoiding all unnecessary delay in such cases where delay might prove a source of serious danger. I can assure the noble Lord that there is no ground for the apprehensions expressed in the Question.
