HC Deb 16 February 1882 vol 266 cc783-4
SIR WALTER B. BARTTELOT

asked the Vice President of the Council, If he will state the number of scheduled counties on account of foot and mouth disease; whether the restrictive orders have had the desired effect; whether he can state he is now able to withdraw from the Schedule any counties, especially the county of Sussex; and, whether some effective means could not be taken to prevent veterinary practitioners from carrying the disease from place to place by their own carelessness and want of the most ordinary precaution?

MR. MUNDELLA

Sir, 12 counties, with the boroughs therein, have been scheduled since the Order was framed on December 29. This measure has been so successful in arresting disease that we have been able to pass an. Order releasing, from Monday next, eight counties, including the county of Sussex. The only remaining counties are Lincoln, Northampton, Lancashire, and the West Riding of Yorkshire. With reference to the suggestion that disease is spread by veterinary practitioners, I am afraid that no action of the Privy Council could insure the adoption of such reasonable precautions as are incumbent upon every intelligent practitioner.

SIR R. ASSHETON CROSS

Is Cumberland exempt?

MR. MUNDELLA

Yes, Sir. All except the four counties I have mentioned.
