HC Deb 16 May 1881 vol 261 cc561-2
MR. CROPPER

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether it is the fact that the Government of Madagascar are prepared to conclude a new Treaty with England as soon as possible; and, if so, whether Her Majesty's Government will consider the expediency of enabling the Government of Madagascar to control the unrestricted importation of Mauritius rum into the Island?

SIR CHARLES W. DILKE

Sir, the revision of the Treaty of 1865 between Great Britain and Madagascar is under the consideration of Her Majesty's Government, and communications on the subject are taking place with the Hova Government, who propose to increase the duty of 10 per cent now levied on Colonial rum.
