HC Deb 12 May 1881 vol 261 cc274-5
MR. BELLINGHAM

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether, in view of the general principle of absolute re- ligious toleration in the Government of this Country, he is prepared to advocate the abolition of all remaining religious checks at present existing such as those which prevent a Lord Chancellor or Sovereign of Great Britain being a Catholic, and thus to endanger the Protestant succession as established by Law?

MR. GLADSTONE

No, Sir; the Government have no intention of advocating anything of the kind.
