HC Deb 24 June 1881 vol 262 c1218
MR. ECROYD

gave Notice that on Thursday he would ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether the statement is correct which recently appeared in the newspapers, that the French Consul at Quebec had received and communicated to the Governor General in Council official information that the French Minister for Foreign Affairs decided to conclude a Commercial Treaty direct with Canada?

SIR CHARLES W. DILKE

Sir, if the House will permit me, I will deal with this matter at once by replying to the Notice as if it were a Question. I have been informed by the Canadian Prime Minister and by the Representative of Canada in this country that they have no knowledge of any such communication having been made, and, certainly, that Canada has not taken any steps to cause such a communication to be made.
